Reading Lists

There are so many reading lists out there for all grade levels, and everyone has an opinion about what is appropriate at every age.  I have been working really hard this week at planning out my dd11's reading list for 6th grade and thought it might give others some ideas.

When I make a list I start with what is recommended by the curriculum we use for the grade we are in.  Currently I am using Oak Meadow for history, so I looked at what they were putting in the curriculum.  For 6th the list includes: The Rainbow People by Lawrence Yep, the Bible, D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths, Robin Hood, and some smaller reading selections.  We also use Moving Beyond the Page so I wanted to incorporate several of their Language Arts Units as well.  I have decided to use their unit for Greek mythology as well as:  A Wrinkle in Time, The View from Saturday, The Wanderer, Albert Einstein, and an unit on short stories.  I am putting together my own study for Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and for The Westing Game as well.   Nonfiction will be covered through the extra books I add in for history and science, as well as dd pursuing her own interests.

I feel excited about all our selections and am looking forward to using these books in the classroom.  I thought it might be helpful to also post my list of books that I intend to have dd work on for "free" reading.  I will add to this list as we go and include reviews from both dd and myself of each book as it is read.
